SMAT 2025-26: Which are the promoted and relegated teams for next season?


The group stage of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025-26 season concluded on Monday with eight teams securing a place in the next round – the Super League.

The top two teams from each group will play the Super League stage, where they will be divided into two groups of four each. The winners of these two groups will contest the final.

The Super League round will be played from December 12 to 16 and the final will be held on December 18 in Pune.

Which team has been relegated from SMAT Elite Groups?

Among the laggards, Services finished as the worst among the 32 teams in the Elite Groups and will be relegated to the Plate Group in the tournament’s next edition in 2026-27. Services ended the group stage with just four points to its tally, having won just one of out its seven fixtures.

Himachal Pradesh and Bihar also ended with four points each, but avoided relegation due to a superior Net Run Rate.

According to the BCCI’s playing conditions for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, “For teams participating in the Elite Groups, a combined list shall be prepared for the purpose of promotion, relegation and segregation of teams into groups for the next Season. The team that finishes at the bottom in this list in 2025-26 season shall be relegated to Plate Group in 2026-27 season.”

The rules further add. “the ranking of the teams for One Day & T20 tournaments will be based on points, then wins and then NRR.”

Which team has been promoted from SMAT Plate Group?

The winner of the Plate Group will earn a promotion to the Elite Groups for the next season. This year, Mizoram prevailed in the Plate Group by defeating Sikkim in the title clash by 10 runs.
