Shubman Gill likely to be appointed as India’s ODI captain
Shubman Gill is likely to be appointed as India’s ODI captain for the three-match series against Australia, while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will also be part of the squad.
The selection meeting, which was held virtually on Saturday morning, was attended by Gill, and the selectors, it is learnt, have spoken to Rohit, explaining to him that they are looking at a young captain in the lead-up to the 2027 ODI World Cup.
However, contrary to speculation, both Rohit and Kohli will continue being part of the ODI team for now. Their last international appearance was in March during the Champions Trophy, which India won under Rohit’s captaincy.
Earlier this year, Gill was appointed the Test captain after Rohit and Kohli retired from the format, and it is learnt that going forward, the selectors and the team management want to give Gill a longer rope as ODI captain too.
