Scylla Dominates the Breeders’ Cup Distaff
Scylla avenged her dam Close Hatches ‘ runner-up finish in 2013 with an explosive front-running score in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) Nov. 1 at Del Mar.
When expected pacesetter and favorite Seismic Beauty bobbled leaving the gate, Scylla and jockey Junior Alvarado seized the advantage and never looked back in the Distaff. She was 5 1/2 length in front under the wire.
Top 3-year-old filly Nitrogen closed to get second while 30-1 shot Regaled completed the trifecta.
Seismic Beauty could never recover from her poor start and was off the board.
A homebred for Juddmonte, Scylla stopped the clock in 1.48.07 for 1 1/8 miles on a fast main track.
Bill Mott, who also trained Scylla’s champion dam, trains the 5-year-old daughter of Tapit .
