Scholes slams ‘crazy’ Chelsea decision to hire Rosenior

Paul Scholes has criticised Chelsea’s decision to appoint Liam Rosenior, saying the move was flawed from the outset following the coach’s recent dismissal.

Rosenior lasted just over three months at Stamford Bridge after being sacked on the back of five straight Premier League defeats, a run in which his side failed to score.

The 41-year-old had been appointed in January on a long-term deal by Chelsea’s ownership group BlueCo, arriving from sister club Strasbourg.

“I don’t see what the Chelsea owners are trying to do,” Scholes said on The Overlap Fan Debate.

“Develop young players, is that a way of doing it? I don’t know.”

Scholes suggested that Rosenior’s lack of top-level experience made the appointment a risk that ultimately did not pay off, placing responsibility on the club’s hierarchy.

“The owners will take blame for a lot of it, of course they will,” he said.

“Other than the owners, nobody else in and around football thought Liam Rosenior was the right person for Chelsea. It was just crazy for me.

“Once you make that decision, what is Liam going to do? He is not going to say no to a Chelsea job from where he was,” Scholes said.

“But once the owners make that decision, then they have to factor in that there’s going to be times when it’s not going that well.

“Now, losing five Premier League games and not scoring a goal is a big problem and you are not going to survive that and he hasn’t.”

Chelsea consider next manager

First-team coach Calum McFarlane has stepped in on an interim basis and oversaw Chelsea’s progression to the FA Cup final following victory over Leeds.

Attention has now turned to a permanent replacement, with names including Xabi Alonso, Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva under consideration.

Chelsea return to Premier League action against Nottingham Forest as they look to salvage a disappointing campaign.

The club currently sit eighth in the table, still within reach of European qualification places despite their recent run of form.
