Rohit Sharma tops ICC ODI batting rankings for first time

Indian opener Rohit Sharma climbed to the top of the ICC Men’s ODI batting rankings for the first time in his career, in the latest iteration of the list released on Wednesday.

Rohit rose two spots from third after scoring an unbeaten century in the third ODI against Australia in Sydney, helping India to a nine-wicket win. He is the fifth Indian to top the batting rankings after Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill.

Rohit’s 33rd ODI century and a handy 74* from Virat Kohli helped India avoid a series clean sweep. The knock helped Rohit pip Shubman Gill (now third) and Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran in the list.

Despite his half-century, Kohli slipped one place to sixth in the batting rankings, falling behind New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell, who scored an unbeaten 78 in New Zealand’s win over England in the first bilateral ODI. Shreyas Iyer moved one place up to ninth on the list, replacing Shai Hope.

Among other Indian players, Axar Patel jumped up to 31st in the ODI bowling rankings, while also rising four spots to eighth in the all-rounder list.
