Ranji Trophy: Mohammed Shami takes five wickets as Bengal beats Gujarat by 141 runs
Mohammed Shami took a five-wicket haul (5 for 38) on Tuesday as Bengal defeated Gujarat by 141 runs at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, registering its second consecutive win in the ongoing Ranji Trophy. The 35-year-old pacer had returned figures of 3 for 44 in the first innings.
The performance was another reminder of Shami’s enduring class. Yet, despite his form, the veteran seamer has fallen out of favour with the national selectors in recent months. His Test prospects took a major hit when he was left out of both India A’s multi-day matches against Australia A in September and the upcoming fixtures against South Africa A.
Following a successful Champions Trophy campaign, Shami featured in a full IPL season before turning out for East Zone in the Duleep Trophy. However, the knockout format meant he could play only one game, with his team bowing out in the quarterfinals.
He carried that form into Bengal’s recent eight-wicket win over Uttarakhand, where he was named Player of the Match for figures of 3/37 and 4/38.
Bengal is currently joint-second with Haryana in Group C, with both teams tied on 12 points after two matches.
