Rachin Ravindra ruled out of Chappell-Hadlee T20I series, Neesham called up
BLACKCAPS batter Rachin Ravindra has been ruled out of the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy KFC T20I series against Australia after sustaining a facial injury during training at Bay Oval.
Ravindra collided with a boundary hoarding during a fielding drill on Monday and required stitches for a deep laceration to his upper lip and nose. He has since been released from the squad to recover at home.
Coach Rob Walter said the team was gutted to lose Ravindra but his wellbeing had to come first.
“We’re all really disappointed for Rachin to be forced to miss the series,” Walter said. “He sustained a major laceration which required specialist stitching and will take time to heal. Rachin is an important player for us, but his health is the priority. The aim is to have him ready for the England series in two weeks’ time.”
All-rounder Jimmy Neesham has been drafted in as replacement. The 84-cap veteran, most recently part of the squad in Zimbabwe in July, has already joined the group in Tauranga.
Walter welcomed Neesham’s inclusion, describing him as a proven asset.
“We’re lucky to be able to call on Jimmy who brings all his experience and all-round capabilities. It’s going to be a big night at Bay Oval and we’re looking forward to getting the Chappell-Hadlee underway.”
Ravindra had been in strong form in T20Is this year, with scores of 69, 30, 3, 63 and 47 in his last five innings.
