Man Utd ‘top drawer’ in derby win says Carrick
Interim Manchester United manager Michael Carrick was full of praise for his side after their superb performance delivered a memorable 2-0 derby day win over Manchester City.
Second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu gave United a deserved win after Carrick coaxed a much-improved display from his side.
Only some fine saves from Gigi Donnarumma and the offside flag prevented a bigger margin of victory as United saw three ‘goals’ chalked off.
Carrick said: “There was so much good in the day. I think I was interested going into the game about how it would come together.
“City are an unbelievable team, they make you work so hard for so many things within the game that we had to be aware of. The boys took it on so, so well and were able to control that emotionally. I just felt like they were really desperate to do well, the boys.
“If anything, I was worried about the desperation over-spilling and making bad decisions because you’re so keen, but they managed it so well. To put on a performance like that today, it was a special day. It was a nice feeling.”
Carrick has been put in charge until the end of the season after United parted ways with Ruben Amorim.
United end the day in fifth place after Liverpool were held by Burnley and Carrick wants to kick on.
“It’s got to be a start, we’ve got another big game next week and we’ve got to build as we go through the season. We’re not getting carried away,” he said.
“The starters, the boys that were not involved, the subs, the ones that came on, everyone has been top drawer, and it all came together and it all came together nicely.”
