Jagadeesan to lead Tamil Nadu in Vijay Hazare Trophy, Sudharsan named vice-captain
N. Jagadeesan will lead Tamil Nadu in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy that starts on December 24. B. Sai Sudharsan has been named vice-captain. The State senior committee has picked a 16-member squad that features a few fresh faces.
As many as seven players who were part of the Under-23 squad that won the BCCI one-day competition have been rewarded. Apart from M. Boopathi Vaishna Kumar, who led the under-23 squad and Mohamed Ali, the rest of them have been handed their maiden call-ups.
These include Sachin Rathi, pacer G. Govinth, all-rounder Sunny Sandhu, leggie Karthik Manikandan and wicketkeeper S.R. Athish.
It has meant that notable names like pacers Sandeep Warrier and T. Natarajan have not been selected. Similarly, M. Shahrukh Khan, who was dropped from the T20 side midway through the tournament, has also been dropped.
The one-day competition is an important tournament for the southern side, which has had a terrible run on and off the field in domestic competitions so far. A good performance is needed to salvage some pride in what has been a horrific season for TN.
In the Ranji Trophy, the team is out of the qualification race, having lost two of its five games outright and conceded the lead in two others. Only against Nagaland did TN take the first-innings lead, and it is seventh on the table with five points.
In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, TN failed to progress beyond the league stage for the fourth year in a row, winning just three of its seven games.
Last year in the one-day competition, TN lost to Rajasthan in the pre-quarterfinals.
The five-time champion is placed in Elite Group A alongside current holder Karnataka. Others in the group are Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Pondicherry, Kerala and Tripura.
