IRE vs ZIM, T20 World Cup 2026 preview: Zimbabwe eyes Super Eight liftoff to cloud nine
November 26, 2023. Zimbabwe had just been beaten by Uganda in the Men’s T20 World Cup Africa regional final to end its hopes of qualifying for the 2024 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA. It was the only full member nation not to be on the plane to the North American continent.
Just 26 months later, the Chevrons are within reach of a place in the Super Eight stage of the 2026 T20 World Cup—something they haven’t managed since the tournament’s inception in 2007. The team gears up for its Group B clash against Ireland at the Pallekele International Stadium on Tuesday, knowing a win could take it a step closer to creating history.
Zimbabwe will prepare for the contest with one eye on the encounter between Sri Lanka and Australia at the same venue. A victory for the co-host will make things clear for the Sikandar Raza-led side—beat Ireland and a place in the final eight is secure. A win for the Aussies could force Net Run Rate (NRR) to be the deciding factor in the Group if Zimbabwe succumbs to Sri Lanka in its final game.
Ireland cannot be counted out just yet from the conversation either. A win against Zimbabwe and some help from Sri Lanka against Australia will mean the Green and Whites can still progress if they manage a better NRR than their peers. But this will be no easy feat against a Zimbabwe side that outplayed Australia just three days ago.
Brian Bennett, the leading T20I run-scorer since the last World Cup, and Tadiwanashe Marumani have been ice and fire at the top of the order. The blistering starts provided by Marumani have allowed the former to take minimal risk and bat deep. With veteran batter Brendan Taylor ruled out of the tournament due to injury, the move to promote all-rounder Ryan Burl to three worked a treat against the Aussies.
Zimbabwe’s strongest suit has, however, been its bowling attack. The lanky Blessing Muzarabani (4/17) troubled the Australian batters with the extra bounce he gets off the deck. He was ably supported in his pursuit by Brad Evans (3/23). The team will hope Richard Ngarava, Graeme Cremer, and skipper Raza can recover from their niggles and make the bowling force more potent.
The injury dart has also struck the Irish. Captain Paul Stirling pulled up during the contest against Australia, and ligament damage to the knee has forced him to be replaced by uncapped batter Sam Topping in the squad. The team will take some positives from its batting performance against Oman, led by Lorcan Tucker’s unbeaten 94. Ireland’s bowlers too came back strongly after being carted around by Aamir Kaleem in the first phase of the innings.
The conditions across the 2026 edition have been a great leveller, with application with bat and ball taking precedence over individual bravado. Zimbabwe will hope it can extend its clinical application and winning momentum for at least one more encounter. Otherwise, it will be another case of one step forward, two steps back for the African nation.
