India vice-captain Shreyas Iyer hospitalised in Sydney with internal injury

India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to a hospital in Sydney and is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after suffering from an internal injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia.

Iyer hurt himself while taking a brilliant running catch to dismiss Alex Carey on Saturday. Though he initially appeared to have shaken off the impact, he reportedly complained of discomfort upon returning to the dressing room and was immediately taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

He is expected to remain in the ICU for a few more days before being shifted to a general ward. His parents are travelling to Australia to be with him.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Iyer is stable and receiving treatment under the supervision of the team’s medical staff and local specialists. He is likely to stay in Sydney for at least a week before being cleared to travel back to India.

Initially expected to miss about three weeks of action, Iyer’s recovery timeline may now extend further depending on how quickly he responds to treatment. He is not part of India’s T20 squad.
