IND vs WI, 2nd Test: Rahul’s fifty helps India polish off series sweep vs West Indies

KL Rahul made no fuss about a few additional overs at the crease on the fifth day of the second Test, completed his fifty (58 n.o., 108b, 6×4, 2×6), and took his time in securing India a seven-wicket victory against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday.

He spelt out his intent when he started the day with a maiden over against Jomel Warrican. The first run of the day came off Sai Sudharsan’s inside edge that sprayed towards fine leg.

But Rahul aptly injected momentum after India managed just three runs from the opening four overs. He hopped out of his crease and lofted Warrican through the line over long off. He emulated the approach against Khary Pierre and picked six more over long on.

Rahul and Sudharsan were unflustered even as the West Indies inserted an umbrella field with a silly point, slip, leg slip and short leg. The latter, however, poked at a wider delivery from Roston Chase with hard hands to slip, once again depriving himself of a well-earned half century. But the wicket was Shai Hope’s in equal measure for his one-handed grab to his right.

AS IT HAPPENED – India vs West Indies Day 5

India’s mood seemed to have shifted when Shubman Gill charged at Chase and wafted his length ball beyond the sight screen. In the previous over, Rahul shifted squarer after his hits down the ground, slog sweeping Warrican over midwicket.

The urgency brought Gill’s end, though, as he miscued a slog across the line to be snaffled at short midwicket by Justin Greaves.

Rahul ensured there were no further hiccups, and even relished himself with a reverse sweep against Warrican, just one ball after completing his fifty in 102 balls.

For Dhruv Jurel, six deliveries were enough to open his account, which he did with a late cut past short third man off Chase. Rahul whipped a length ball through mid on to close the door on the West Indies, 63 minutes after the start of day.
