Gin Gin Outlasts Nitrogen for Spinster Upset
After setting a quick pace, Calumet Farm homebred Gin Gin was able to outlast a late charge by Nitrogen by a nose and pull the upset in the $650,000 Spinster Stakes (G1) at Keeneland Oct. 5.
Ridden by Luis Saez and trained by Brendan Walsh, Gin Gin was able to outlast the pressure of 2024 Horse of the Year, Thorpedo Anna , who faded on the far turn and finished fourth. Nitrogen and Scylla made rallies down the stretch, but were too late.
Gin Gin completed 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.77 and paid $38.64 to win. With the victory, Gin Gin earns an automatic, fees-paid berth to the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) at Del Mar Nov. 1.
Gin Gin is a homebred out of Calumet’s stallion Hightail , who stood the 2025 season for a $7,500 fee.
