BAN vs IRE, 1st Test: Mahmudul century helps Bangladesh press home advantage on Day 2

Mahmudul Hasan Joy’s unbeaten century on Day 2, his first in three years, helped Bangladesh take control of the 1st Test against Ireland at Sylhet on Wednesday.

The right-hander combined for a mammoth 168-run opening partnership with Shadman Islam, helping Bangladesh past Ireland’s first-innings total of 286.

Former skipper Mominul Haque contributed with an unbeaten half-century (80) to help Bangladesh finish Day 2 on 338 for one.

Left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys picked the lone wicket to fall, forcing Shadman to nick his cut shot back to Lorcan Tucker behind the stumps.

Earlier in the day, Ireland could add only 15 runs to its overnight score, losing the last two wickets within 14 balls. Barry McCarthy was the last wicket to fall for a solid 31, cleaned up by Hasan Mahmud.

With nine wickets in the bag, Bangladesh will look to extend the 52-run lead well past the 300-run mark and ensure the side doesn’t have to bat again.
