Record alert: Ishan Kishan achieves rare feat as captain
80Ishan Kishan’s score for SRH against RCB in Bengaluru on 28 March 2026 is now the fourth-highest by any batter in an IPL season opener. Nearly 18 years earlier, also in Bengaluru, Brendon McCullum delivered his historic innings in the inaugural IPL match on 18 April 2008, a performance that remains a standout. Kishan’s knock is also among the list of captains who have had the unique distinction of registering a high score in the first IPL match as a captain. Sanju Samson is the only IPL skipper to manage a three-figure score on his very first appearance as a captain in this tournament. Both tables below have the details.

72The runs scored by Australian Connor Connolly on his first IPL appearance, while playing for Punjab Kings against Gujarat Titans in Mullanpur on 31 March 2026. His score is now the fifth-highest by any debutant batter in IPL history. Only two players have managed a three-figure score on their IPL debut — Brendon McCullum (158*) and Michael Hussey (116) for KKR and CSK, respectively. Curiously, both these feats came in the first two IPL games of the inaugural edition in 2008. Five of the seven highest debut scores have come in the inaugural season, as can be seen in the table below.

10 The number of occasions an individual fifty was achieved in 15 or fewer balls in IPL cricket history. This season, 15-year-old batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi joined this elite list during his fifty in just 15 balls for RR against CSK in Guwahati on 30 March 2026. His opening team-mate, Yashasvi Jaiswal, has done it the quickest — in 13 balls against KKR in Kolkata in 2023. Australian Jake Fraser-McGurk’s case is unique, as he is the only one in the list below to have done so twice.

2 The number of T20 cricket batters to score a fifty or more before the age of 16. India’s Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s explosive innings in Guwahati on 30 March 2026 marked his fifth such score before this age. Notably, this tally also features three centuries. Afghan batter Hassan Eisakhil is the only other listed below, in the table totally dominated by the young Suryavanshi.
