Women’s ODI World Cup 2025: IND v BAN washed out but Pratika’s injury poses new problems for India

Four major rain interruptions. Three changes to India’s line-up. Two left-arm spinners coming good and one major injury scare for India were not enough to produce a result to a sizable turnout at the D.Y. Patil Stadium that had gathered in anticipation of watching the Women in Blue end the league stage on a high.

Ultimately, rain emerged as the winner as the last league match of the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 was abandoned. Bangladesh finished its rain-curtailed essay of 27 overs for 119 for nine, thus setting India a revised target of 126 runs.

When the play was abandoned at 10.05pm – and the match called off 15 minutes later – due to yet another persistent drizzle, an on-song Smriti Mandhana and her makeshift opening partner Amanjot Kaur had helped India cruise to 57 for no loss in the ninth over.

Amanjot was forced to partner Smriti after Pratika Rawal twisted her knee and ankle while chasing a ball on the wet outfield in the 21st over, giving the camp an injury scare ahead of Thursday’s semifinal against Australia.

Pratika has been an important cog in the Indian batting wheel with 308 runs in six games, including a century and a half century. While her scoring rate and strike rotation has come under the scanner, she has been a vital part of a rather dominant opening pairing with Smriti Mandhana and has consistently set India up for victory with her senior partner.

While India will be fretting over Pratika’s availability, the day was marred by frequent rain breaks.

The start-stop day began with the toss delayed by 35 minutes, followed by another downpour soon after. When play finally began as a 43-over contest two hours behind schedule, Renuka Thakur dismissed Sumaiya Akter in the opening over, while offie Deepti Sharma chipped in with a breakthrough from the other end in her third over.

Rain returned in the 13th over, forcing a 135-minute delay and a further reduction of overs. From 39 for two, Bangladesh relied on skipper Nigar Sultana to rebuild, but a sharp piece of fielding from Radha – a direct hit from point catching Nigar short of her crease –broke the resistance.

Radha, in her maiden outing of the tournament, impressed by emerging as the highest wicket-taker with three wickets in her six overs, accounting for Sobhana Mostary, Nahida Akter and Rabeya Khan.

India made three changes: Radha replaced Sneh Rana, Amanjot Kaur returned for Kranti Gaud, and Uma Chetry made her ODI debut in place of Richa Ghosh.
