Who is Cooper Connolly? Australia’s rising all-rounder lights up IPL debut

Cooper Connolly did not arrive at the Indian Premier League with the weight of form behind him. If anything, his recent numbers suggested a player still searching for rhythm.

In the lead-up, the 22-year-old had blown hot and cold. He began the 2025-26 Big Bash League brightly with two aggressive knocks, but the returns dipped sharply after that, just 73 runs across his next 10 outings. Even on international duty with Australia, opportunities were sparse and impact even more so, a solitary run in three T20Is in Pakistan, followed by modest scores of 3 and 11 not out at the 2026 T20 World Cup.

And yet, there were signs of value beneath the surface. During that same BBL season, Connolly contributed consistently with the ball, picking up 15 wickets at an economy of 6.40, numbers that hinted at a cricketer offering more than just batting promise.

That dual skillset is what drew Punjab Kings to him at the 2026 mini-auction, securing him for Rs. 3 crore as a long-term overseas investment. Connolly himself framed it simply at the time, he wanted to “leave a legacy at Punjab.”

His first outing suggested he might not be speaking lightly.

On debut against Gujarat Titans, Connolly walked in at No. 3 and played an innings that was both controlled and decisive. Unbeaten on 72 off 44 balls, he struck five sixes and five fours, anchoring a chase that threatened to unravel after a middle-order wobble. Punjab got home with five balls to spare, and Connolly walked away with the Player of the Match award.

If there was pressure, he did not acknowledge it. His focus, he said, was simply on absorbing the experience and contributing to a collective effort.

Coached by Ricky Ponting, Punjab may have found more than a utility player. Connolly’s debut suggests a cricketer who, even without ideal preparation, can alter the direction of a game.
