Tommy Jo Wins Alcibiades Via Disqualification

Spendthrift Farm’s Tommy Jo  crossed the wire second in the $650,000 Alcibiades Stakes (G1) Oct. 3 at Keeneland, but a midstretch bump from original winner Percy’s Bar  led the stewards to change the order of finish.

Hat Creek Racing’s Percy’s Bar took charge of the race for 2-year-old fillies at the start and led at every point of call, with 2-5 favorite Tommy Jo tracking her from the outside. Those rivals matched strides in the lane, and it appeared Percy’s Bar had the upper hand when she drifted out and bumped Tommy Jo in reaction to left-handed crop usage from rider Luan Machado.

Percy’s Bar finished the 1 1/6 miles on the fast dirt track in 1:44.69, crossing the wire about 2 1/2 lengths in front. A stewards’ inquiry and rider objection from Tommy Jo’s jockey John Velazquez soon followed.

Edwin C. Anthony’s The Grumpy Rabbit  finished third.

The Alcibiades was a Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series event, granting Tommy Jo an automatic, fees-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) Oct. 31 at Del Mar. The Into Mischief   filly had already earned her spot in the Breeders’ Cup thanks to an Aug. 30 Spinaway Stakes (G1) victory over Percy’s Bar.
