T20 World Cup 2026: India fumbles in the field against West Indies, drops three catches
India had an off day in the field during the T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eight encounter against the West Indies at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday.
The Men in Blue dropped three chances to allow the Windies to post 195 for four in 20 overs in the do-or-die encounter.
Abhishek Sharma was guilty of dropping a gilt-edge chance in the fifth over, just as Shai Hope and Roston Chase were accelerating against pace. Chase had got a top edge on a delivery, which went straight up in the air towards cover, where Abhishek as placed. Despite being right under the ball, the opener failed to latch on.
Tilak Varma missed out on a tough chance at deep midwicket in the 13th over bowled by Axar Patel. Sherfane Rutherford punished a short ball by pulling it through the legside, but the ball flew away after brushing Tilak’s fingers after a full-length dive.
Abhishek was guilty of a second drop closer to the end of the innings, when he ran in from the deep at midwicket, but couldn’t complete the catch with a forward dive.
Varun Chakaravarthy also missed a run-out chance in the third over when Chase and Hope were stranded in the centre of the pitch. The spinner failed to throw the ball to a waiting keeper behind the stumps, instead choosing to have a shy at the non-striker’s where he missed the target by a huge distance.
India has dropped the most chances among all teams this World Cup — 13. The side’s catching efficiency of 71.7% is the worst among sides which made it to the Super Eight stage.
The side will have to complete the fourth-highest successful chase in T20s at the Eden Gardens if it has to secure a place in the semifinal.
