T20 series against Australia part of build up for 2026 World Cup, says India captain Suryakumar
India captain Suryakumar Yadav on Tuesday said the PowerPlay overs will be crucial in the five-match T20I series against Australia beginning here on Wednesday, adding that pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah’s presence will give his side a significant edge during that phase of the game.
“Yes, it’s always a challenge. We’ve seen how they (Australia) played in the ODI series and the T20 World Cup. The PowerPlay is always important,” Suryakumar said at the pre-series press conference.
“You saw in the Asia Cup — he (Bumrah) took the responsibility of bowling at least two overs in the PowerPlay. It’s great to see him put his hand up and take charge in those crucial moments,” Suryakumar said.

Suryakumar said all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who missed the final ODI with a quadriceps injury, is likely to be fit for the T20I series against Australia. “He’s doing fine. He ran and batted in the nets yesterday and wanted to stay with the group today even though practice was optional,” the skipper said.
Suryakumar added that India views the series as part of its preparation for next year’s T20 World Cup. “The combination remains similar to what we used in South Africa — one fast bowler, one all-rounder, three spinners. The conditions are alike, with bouncy tracks,” he said.
Emphasising adaptability, Suryakumar noted, “Whether in Australia, England, or South Africa, conditions are always challenging. What matters is how you adjust your game and find ways to score — that’s non-negotiable at this level.”

Suryakumar said India has been putting extra emphasis on fielding after some recent lapses, calling it an area the team must “work a little harder” on to become the best in the world. “What matters is how you respond after poor fielding. Today was an optional session, yet everyone came to field. That shows intent,” he said. “There’s no guarantee you won’t drop catches again, but effort and intent matter more.”
On team selection, Suryakumar admitted it was a “good headache” given the depth in both batting and bowling. “It’s tough to leave anyone out, but everyone knows the ultimate goal is to win for India,” he said.
He cited Rinku Singh’s Asia Cup cameo as proof that opportunities can come anytime. The skipper also praised Shivam Dube’s all-round growth, adding, “He’s been working hard on his bowling. If your preparation is right, your mind stays clear.”
