Shubman Gill likely to be available for Punjab in Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 against Sikkim, Goa

Shubman Gill is likely to be available for Punjab’s Vijay Hazare Trophy group league fixture against Sikkim and Goa in the first week of January.

While there were speculations that India’s Test and ODI skipper could link up with the squad here for the third and fourth group league games, sources in the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) have confirmed to Sportstar that Gill has assured them of his availability for the two games on January 3 and 6.

“He will join the team in Jaipur around January 1 for those two games. While he is interested in playing the final group league fixture against Mumbai as well, it will all depend on the BCCI’s scheduling for the camps ahead of the home series against New Zealand,” the source said.

India will play New Zealand from January 11, and the team is likely to hold a preparatory camp in Vadodara, a couple of days before the series starts. So, in that case, Gill might have to give the game against Mumbai a miss.

Gill, who was recently dropped from the T20 World Cup squad, has been out of action for a while due to an impact injury to his right foot. Last month, he was ruled out of the second Test against South Africa due to a neck injury.

Following the BCCI’s mandate that all players should feature in domestic tournaments when not on national duty, there were speculations that Gill could be available for the entire Vijay Hazare Trophy, along with Abhishek Sharma.

Though Abhishek featured in the tournament-opener against Maharashtra, Gill has been at training in Mohali, after recovering from the foot injury.

Punjab has had a memorable start, winning both its games – against Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, and as the tournament progresses, the team management is hopeful that Gill’s presence will further bolster the batting unit.
