Shapovalov Overpowers Basavareddy in ATP 500 Acapulco Opener
ACAPULCO, Mexico – Denis Shapovalov overcame a slow start and a pre-match delay to defeat rising American talent Nishesh Basavareddy 7-5, 6-2 in the first round of the ATP 500 Mexican Open on Tuesday.
The match, held under the lights in Acapulco, saw Basavareddy, a promising young player, challenge the experienced Canadian early on. The first set was a tightly contested affair, with Basavareddy displaying impressive resilience. However, Shapovalov’s power and experience began to shine through as the match progressed.
After a hard fought first set, which Shapovalov clinched 7-5, he found his rhythm in the second, dictating play and capitalizing on crucial break point opportunities. While Basavareddy fought valiantly, he was ultimately unable to match Shapovalov’s intensity and consistency.
Shapovalov’s aggressive style, characterized by powerful groundstrokes and a willingness to attack the net, proved too much for the young American. Although Shapovalov recorded more double faults than his opponent, his higher number of winners ultimately proved decisive.
The victory propels Shapovalov into the next round, while Basavareddy, despite the loss, gained valuable experience competing against a top-tier ATP Tour player.
