Shaheen Shah Afridi named Pakistan ODI captain

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday appointed pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi as the captain of the national One Day International (ODI) team.

The 25-year-old will lead Pakistan in the upcoming home ODI series against South Africa, scheduled from November 4 to 8 at Faisalabad’s Iqbal Stadium.

He will replace Mohammad Rizwan, who was appointed captain of the ODI team on October 27 last year.

Rizwan had led the team to series wins in South Africa, Australia and Zimbabwe in his early days as captain, however, the recent failures, including a disastrous Champions Trophy campaign, were a decisive enough factor for the PCB to sack Rizwan.

Earlier, Shaheen last captained the national team in early 2024, leading the T20I side in a five-match home series against New Zealand that Pakistan lost 1-4.

The left-arm pacer has represented Pakistan in 66 ODIs, claiming 131 wickets at an average of 24.28.
