“Hello everyone! I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It has been an absolue honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support through the years. I will continue to represent India in ODI format,” Rohit posted in a story on Instagram.
Here are the top five innings Rohit played during his career:
A Dream debut
In 2013, Rohit Sharma announced his arrival on the Test scene with a scintillating 177 against West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Walking in with India reeling at 82/4, Rohit conjured a rescue act for the ages, unfurling 23 fours and a six in a 301-ball masterpiece. His partnerships, particularly with Ravichandran Ashwin, helped India post a formidable 453, paving the way for a crushing innings-and-51-run victory.
New chapter as opener
Six years later, Rohit was offered the opener’s role against South Africa in Visakhapatnam. The move proved a stroke of genius as Rohit responded with a commanding 176 off 244 balls, embellished with 23 fours and six sixes. Alongside Mayank Agarwal, Rohit forged a 317-run opening stand, laying the foundation for a 203-run triumph.
Double-century masterclass
Rohit’s purple patch continued in the same series as he unleashed a breathtaking 212 against South Africa in Ranchi. His 255-ball innings was studded with 28 fours and six sixes, propelling India to a mammoth 497. The host ultimately cantered to an innings-and-202-run victory, with Rohit emerging as the series’ leading run-scorer with a staggering 529 runs.
Conquering English conditions
At The Oval in 2021, Rohit silenced his critics with a majestic 127 in the second innings of the fourth Test against England. Defying the challenges of swing and seam, Rohit anchored India’s innings, laying the foundation for a resounding 157-run victory.
Masterclass on a Chennai turner
Earlier in 2021, Rohit had unleashed a batting masterclass on a spinning track at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, scoring a brilliant 161 off 231 balls against England. With a perfect blend of aggression and control, Rohit outwitted the English spinners, propelling India to a crushing 317-run win and sparking a series comeback.
