Prithvi Shaw out for duck in first Ranji match for Maharashtra
Prithvi Shaw was out lbw for a duck off the bowling of M.D. Nidheesh in the very first over of the opening day of Ranji Trophy match between Maharashtra and Kerala in Trivandrum on Wednesday.
Shaw had joined Maharashtra ahead of this domestic cricket season. He had sought a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from Mumbai to change teams, which was granted to him in late June.
Shaw’s career numbers still tell the story of a gifted run-maker. In 58 First-Class matches, he has piled up 4,556 runs at an average of 46.02 — evidence of a player who once looked destined to anchor Mumbai’s batting for years. Yet form alone could not shield him from scrutiny. Shaw was dropped from the Mumbai Ranji squad last season, with questions raised over his fitness and discipline. His last outing for the side came in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final in December 2024.
Across formats, his record remains formidable. He owns 3,399 List-A runs at 55.72 and a strike-rate of 125.74, and 2,902 T20 runs at 151.54, though his average in the shortest format sits at 25.01 — a reminder of both his explosiveness and inconsistency. Despite those numbers, the 25-year-old found no takers in the IPL 2025 mega auction, a stark indicator of how far perception has drifted from potential.
