Pragyan Ojha, RP Singh frontrunners for India national selectors’ role

Former India internationals Pragyan Ojha and RP Singh have emerged as the front-runners for the national senior selection committee, following the exit of S. Sharath and Subroto Banerjee.

Sportstar understands that several other noted names — including former India pacer Praveen Kumar, batter Amay Khurasiya, Ashish Winston Zaidi, and Shakti Singh — are also among the applicants.

However, sources indicate that both Ojha and RP were specifically asked to apply for the post, and the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), headed by Ashok Malhotra, is expected to clear their names ahead of the BCCI’s AGM on September 28.

With Sharath moving on to the junior selection committee, replacing Tilak Naidu, the 39-year-old Ojha appears to be the frontrunner. The left-arm spinner played 24 Tests, 18 ODIs, and six T20Is for India, taking 144 wickets across formats. Domestically, he represented Hyderabad, Bengal, and Bihar before serving on the IPL Governing Council.

2007 T20 World Cup winner RP Singh played 82 internationals, taking 124 wickets.

A member of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup-winning squad, RP Singh featured in 82 internationals and picked up 124 wickets across formats. He has previously served on the CAC before moving into a full-time role as a television commentator.

According to BCCI’s eligibility criteria, an applicant must have played a minimum of seven Tests, or 30 First-Class matches, or 10 ODIs and 20 First-Class games. Candidates should have retired from professional cricket at least five years earlier and must not have served on any BCCI cricket committee for a cumulative period of more than five years.
