Injury scare for Australia as Hazlewood, Abbott undergo assessments ahead of first Ashes Test
Australia suffered injury scares on Wednesday as pace bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Sean Abbott underwent assessments for hamstring issues ahead of the first Ashes Test, scheduled to begin on November 21.
According to media reports, both players left New South Wales’ Sheffield Shield match against Victoria at the Sydney Cricket Ground to have their niggles examined. Neither Cricket Australia nor Cricket NSW has confirmed any details.
Any injury would be a major concern for Australia, which is already without injured captain Pat Cummins for at least the opening Test in Perth. Scott Boland is set to replace him in the attack.
Abbott, who took 4 for 18 against Victoria before leaving the field, was named in Australia’s 15-member squad for Perth as a replacement fast bowler, with uncapped Brendon Doggett the other pace option.
