IND vs USA, T20 World Cup 2026: What happened the last time India faced the USA?

India will begin its T20 World Cup defence when it takes on the USA in its first Group-A encounter at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday.

Suryakumar Yadav’s men are the clear favourites to become the first team to retain the trophy as well as win it at home. The Monank Patel-led USA gave a good account of their ability in the shortest format during the previous World Cup, qualifying to the Super Eight stage.

The two teams last met during the 2024 edition in New York. India restricted the opponent to 110/8 in 20 overs after winning the toss and electing to field first. Nitish Kumar top-scored for the American side with a 23-ball 27. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the bowlers, registering four for nine in his four-over spell. All-rounder Hardik Pandya, too, chipped in with two wickets.

India was jolted early in the chase, losing Virat Kohli for a first-ball duck and skipper Rohit Sharma for three within the first three overs. Both scalps were picked by India U-19 international Saurabh Netravalkar. Suryakumar’s steady 49-ball 50 guided India to the finish line with seven wickets to spare in the penultimate over after an unbeaten 72-run stand with Shivam Dube.
