Good Cheer Stays Undefeated With Kentucky Oaks Win
Godolphin homebred Good Cheer remains undefeated in seven starts after winning the $1.5 million Kentucky Oaks (G1) by three lengths May 2 at Churchill Downs. She is the third Oaks winner sired by Darley America’s stallion Medaglia d’Oro .
Tracy Farmer’s homebred La Cara quickly set the pace and was dogged through the first mile by Baoma’s Tenma , the pair taking the field through opening fractions of :22.58, :46.78, and 1:11.36. As they rounded through the second turn, 6-5 favorite Good Cheer went six wide and took aim at the leaders. She rolled with determination to the front with a furlong to spare and drew away to win by three lengths in 1:50.15.
Drexel Hill , a 32-1 longshot, passed the tiring front-runners in the stretch to finish second followed by Bless the Broken .
Good Cheer is trained by Brad Cox and was ridden by her regular rider Luis Saez.
