AUS vs IND: Rohit Sharma becomes fifth Indian to feature in 500 international matches during first ODI against Australia

Former India captain Rohit Sharma became the fifth player from his country to feature in 500 international matches during the first ODI against Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Sunday.

Rohit joined an elite list comprising Sachin Tendulkar (664 matches), Virat Kohli (551 matches), MS Dhoni (538 matches), and Rahul Dravid (509 matches) — all Indians to have represented the country in 500 or more matches at the highest level.

The 38-year-old Rohit, who is playing his 274th ODI match, has also featured in 67 Tests and 159 T20Is. He retired from T20I cricket following India’s World Cup triumph in June last year, and called time on his Test career earlier this year.

The ODI series opener against Australia is Rohit’s first international outing since the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand in March this year, which India won by four wickets to lift the title.

Ahead of the ongoing series, Rohit was replaced as ODI skipper by Shubman Gill, who is also India’s incumbent Test captain.
