AUS vs IND, 2nd ODI: Rohit Sharma becomes first Indian to reach 1000 runs against Australia in away ODIs

Indian batter Rohit Sharma became the first Indian player to reach 1000 ODI runs against Australia (excluding World Cups) in Australia during the second ODI between the two sides at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday.

Rohit is now the fifth player to achieve the feat and joins Viv Richards, Desmond Haynes, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene as the only players to have reached this mark.

The Indian opener reached the landmark in the third over of the first innings with a four against Australian pacer Mitchell Starc.

He went on to record a fighting 73 from 97 deliveries with seven fours and two sixes. After struggling initially against Josh Hazlewood, the opener found his tempo before raising his half-century from 74 balls. He was eventually dismissed by Mitchell Starc.

Rohit had started the ODI series on the wrong foot, after being dismissed for just eight in the opener in Perth, as India crashed to a defeat.

The series marks Rohit and Virat Kohli’s return to competitive cricket, after having last featured for India in the Champions Trophy win in March earlier this year.
