Amarnath appointed Hyderabad Cricket Association president
Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) Ombudsman, Justice (Retd.) Suresh Kumar Kait has announced that Amarnath, of Galaxy Cricket Club, will be the new president of the HCA.
The development comes after Amarnath filed a complaint citing alleged fraudulent practices in the HCA elections held on October 20, 2023, in which Amarnath lost to incumbent chief A. Jagan Mohan Rao, of Sri Chakra Cricket Club, which was earlier known as Gowlipura Cricket Club, by just one vote.
Of the 173 available votes, 169 members had participated in the polling, and Jagan edged Amarnath 63-62. Jagan was backed by the then ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) party, while Amarnath was supported by former India players Shivalal Yadav and Arshad Ayub.
The petition argued that the change in the club’s name and legal status was not carried out in line with existing laws and binding judicial and administrative orders. As a result, the nomination and subsequent election were termed invalid.
In a 12-page order addressed to HCA, seen by Sportstar, the ombudsman ruled that Jagan was not eligible to hold the post of president and directed Amarnath to take charge for the rest of the term. Accordingly, Amarnath has assumed charge as the president of the HCA this week.
“I am of the view that Jagan Mohan Rao does not deserve to hold the post of president of HCA after having so many serious allegations against him, which is misconduct on his part. Accordingly, I remove Mr. Jagan Mohan Rao from the post of President,” the order stated.
“Since the institution cannot be put on hold, the post of President cannot be kept vacant for a longer period. Undisputedly, since the petitioner secured 62 votes, I hereby declare the petitioner as President of the HCA and direct him to take charge within a week from today. He shall continue on the said post for the remaining period (roughly about nine months).”
Notably, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had arrested Jagan and four other office-bearers in July last year following allegations of document forgery and misappropriation of funds. He was later released after obtaining bail by from a local court in Malkajgiri.
