Bangladesh opens Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with six-wicket win over Netherlands

Bangladesh opened its Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a six-wicket victory over debutant Netherlands at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Sunday.

This was the Tigresses’ highest successful chase in the history of the T20 World Cup, and their third-highest overall in women’s T20Is.

The Nigar Sultana Joty-led side chased down the 140-run target with five balls remaining.

Opener Juairiya Ferdous starred with a 33-ball half-century before a 56-run stand between Shorna Akter and Sharmin Akhter stabilised the chase and took Bangladesh home.

Leg spinner Caroline de Lange took the important wickets of Ferdous and Joty, who got out on a golden duck, while fellow leggie Silver Siegers took Dilara Akter’s wicket.

Earlier, newcomer Netherlands was largely anchored by captain Babette de Leede, who scored a measured 50 off 45. The Dutch could only muster 139 after losing wickets at regular intervals, with pacer Marufa Akter picking two.

Fariha Trisna, Sanjida Akter Meghla, Rabeya Khatun, and Ritu Moni picked one wicket apiece.
