ICC Suspends Cricket Canada funding over governance concerns: Reports
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended funding to Cricket Canada for the next six months due to governance-related concerns, according to ESPNcricinfo.
The decision was communicated to Cricket Canada earlier this week.
Despite the suspension, ongoing cricket operations — including national team commitments and high-performance programmes — are expected to continue without disruption.
Cricket Canada is heavily dependent on ICC funding. Financial statements for the year ending 2024 reportedly showed that ICC distributions contributed nearly 63 per cent of the organisation’s total revenue, accounting for CAD 3.6 million out of CAD 5.7 million.
While the ICC has not publicly detailed the governance concerns behind the decision, the Canadian investigative programme Fifth Estate recently reported alleged violations of ICC policies, including issues related to governance practices and financial oversight within the board.
The suspension comes during a difficult period for Cricket Canada, which has been embroiled in several administrative and integrity-related controversies over the past year.
Canada’s match against New Zealand during the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is currently under investigation by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU).
In another ongoing investigation, former Canada head coach Khurram Chohan allegedly stated in a leaked phone recording that former senior board members pressured him to select specific players for the national side. The recording also reportedly included claims relating to attempts to influence matches corruptly.
Cricket Canada has also faced instability surrounding the appointment and later dismissal of former CEO Salman Khan. His appointment reportedly drew ICC attention after previous criminal charges were allegedly not disclosed. Khan has since been charged with theft and fraud by Calgary Police, although he denies the accusations.
Last month, Arvinder Khosa was elected president of Cricket Canada after previously serving in the role on an interim basis, replacing former president Amjad Bajwa.
The ICC’s decision followed Cricket Canada’s annual general meeting on May 9 and 10, during which the board announced several reforms under what it described as an “ongoing governance transformation initiative.”
A new nine-member board of directors was also elected at the meeting.
The ICC has not officially commented on the suspension, and Cricket Canada has yet to release a formal statement in response.
