Rethin Pranav Awarded Qualifying Wildcard at Upgraded SM Krishna Memorial ATP Challenger

Bengaluru, May 15: Fresh off an impressive stint in the US collegiate circuit where he was named the Cornell Rookie of the Year, India’s rising tennis sensation Rethin Pranav Senthil Kumar is set to make waves on home soil. The Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA) has officially handed the young phenom a qualifying draw wildcard for the upcoming 2nd SM Krishna Memorial Open, scheduled from May 17 to May 23, 2026.
The announcement comes at a monumental time for the tournament, which has officially been upgraded to an SM Krishna Memorial Challenger ATP 50. This marks a massive leap in stature from last year’s ITF Men’s M25 event held in April 2025.
From Ivy League to ATP Challenger
Rethin Pranav’s inclusion injects a thrilling burst of momentum into the tournament’s qualifying rounds, which kick off this Sunday. Having recently dominated the collegiate transition by capturing Rookie of the Year honors at Cornell, Rethin represents the exciting future of Indian tennis. The USD $63,500 event offers the perfect launchpad for the youngster to test his mettle against a highly competitive international field.
Tournament Director and Hon. Joint Secretary of AITA, Sunil Yajaman, emphasized the strategy of rewarding high-potential talent:
“We are thrilled to extend qualifying wildcards to promising players like Rethin Pranav, Adil Kalyanpur, Vishal Vasudev M, and Aradhya Kshitij. This tournament is designed to provide our best young assets with an international platform to enhance their rankings and game right here at home.”
A Fitting Tribute and a Bigger Stage
The tournament’s elevation to the ATP Challenger tier serves as a befitting tribute to the Late Mr. S. M. Krishna, the former Chief Minister of Karnataka, External Affairs Minister, and Governor of Maharashtra, who passionately served as President of KSLTA from 1990 until 2020.
Priyank Kharge, Minister of IT, BT & Rural Development & Panchayat Raj and Sr. Vice President of KSLTA, noted:
“The former Chief Minister Late Shri SM Krishna’s contribution to Indian tennis is unparalleled. It is only apt that we have been able to upgrade the event to an ATP Challenger this year. KSLTA will always be grateful for his push to take the sport to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.”
