Report, result and goals as visitors hit with Hammer blow in relegation fight
Brentford strengthened their push for European qualification with a 3-0 win over West Ham, in a result that deepens the visitors’ Premier League relegation concerns.
An early own goal, followed by strikes from Igor Thiago and Mikkel Damsgaard sealed a comprehensive three points in West London, despite West Ham creating numerous chances, particularly in the first half.
Fast start and chaotic first half
Brentford began on the front foot and nearly struck early through Dango Ouattara, whose effort flashed wide after a quick turnover.
The breakthrough arrived in the 15th minute in scrappy fashion. Michael Kayode caused problems at the back post, with his effort eventually turned into the net via Konstantinos Mavropanos for an own goal.
Despite falling behind, West Ham responded. Valentin Castellanos hit both posts in a lively spell and also saw a header ruled out for offside, while Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher was forced into a sharp save from distance.
Penalty swings momentum
West Ham started the second half with a bit more intent, but the game turned against them just before the hour mark.
A clumsy challenge inside the box led to a penalty for Brentford, and Thiago stepped up confidently to convert, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 2-0.
To their credit, West Ham continued to push forward and were again denied by the woodwork, with Crysencio Summerville striking the crossbar after a skilful run.
However, their finishing deserted them throughout the match. Multiple promising openings went begging, and their inability to convert chances ultimately proved costly.
Damsgaard seals emphatic win
The home side wrapped up the victory in the 82nd minute through Damsgaard, who curled a finish into the corner after good work from Keane Lewis-Potter.
That third goal ended any lingering hopes of a comeback and allowed Brentford to see out the closing stages comfortably.
There was also a notable late moment as Joshua Dasilva made a long-awaited return from injury, receiving a warm reception from the home crowd.
