Maiden Final, Runner-Up Finish: Sonal Patil’s Breakthrough Week at ITF W15 Nagpur

Sonal Patil’s remarkable week at ITF W15 Nagpur ended with a runner-up finish, going down to second seed Zhibek Kulambayeva (WTA 419) 1-6, 3-6 in the final.

Patil gave a good account of herself in her first ITF final, but second seed Kulambayeva proved the stronger player on the day, closing out the title with a composed performance across two sets. Kulambayeva had been in fine form all week, having also accounted for third seed Zeel Desai in the semi-finals, and she carried that momentum into the final without letting up.

For Patil, the week was one of personal bests and new milestones. The unseeded Indian navigated her way through a competitive draw, defeating unranked qualifier Kashish Bhatia in an all-Indian quarter-final before producing the win of the tournament in the semis — a comeback victory over sixth seed Elina Nepliy (WTA 690), winning 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 to register the best win of her career by opponent ranking.

Patil received a walkover in the round of 16 against compatriot Ankita Raina, but made every opportunity count from there — competing with authority in each of her matches and showing the kind of composure that belied her ranking of 1159.

The runner-up finish will bring Patil a significant ranking boost, and the experience of a maiden final on home soil is only going to propel her further up.
