Vaishnavi Adkar Earns Maiden National Call-Up as India Announces Billie Jean King Cup Squad
The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has officially announced the squad for the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup Asia-Oceania Group I tournament. Scheduled for April 7–11 at the DLTA Stadium, the event features a minor roster shake-up, most notably the debut of 21-year-old Vaishnavi Adkar.
The Indian Squad
Selected by the AITA committee on March 2, 2026, the team consists of:
- Main Roster: Sahaja Yamalapalli, Vaishnavi Adkar, Shrivalli Bhamidipaty, Rutuja Bhosale, and Ankita Raina
- Reserve: Vaidehee Chaudhari
- Leadership: Vishal Uppal (Captain) and Radhika Kanitkar (Coach)
Vaishnavi Adkar’s Historic Rise
Adkar’s inclusion follows a career-defining performance at the ITF W100 Bengaluru, where she reached the final as a wildcard. This achievement marks the first time an Indian woman has reached a W100 (or higher) final since Sania Mirza in 2009. Her ranking subsequently rocketed from 690 to 468, making her the current India No. 2 behind Sahaja Yamalapalli (World No. 393).
Strategic Highlights
- Singles Focus: India will lean heavily on its young trio of Yamalapalli, Adkar, and Bhamidipaty to lead the charge in singles matches.
- Doubles Selection: In a notable move, Ankita Raina was chosen over the higher-ranked Prarthana Thombare to potentially partner with India’s top doubles specialist, Rutuja Bhosale.
- Tournament Context: India will face off against Indonesia, Korea Republic, New Zealand, Mongolia, and Thailand in a round-robin format. The top two teams will earn a spot in the BJK Cup Play-offs.
Historical Context
Last year, India achieved historic success in Pune by finishing second in the group, aided by Shrivalli Bhamidipaty’s undefeated singles run. While the team ultimately lost their November Play-offs against Slovenia and the Netherlands, this year’s tournament offers a fresh chance to climb back into the qualifiers.
