India vs New Zealand: Key match-ups that could decide the T20 World Cup 2026 final
India will take on New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday in the final of the T20 World Cup 2026.
The defending champion India will be the overwhelming favourite to prevail in home conditions and clinch its third title. But New Zealand has a perfect record against India, winning thrice in the T20 World Cup.
Both teams have been defeated previously in this tournament. India lost to South Africa in the Super Eight stage while New Zealand went down to the same opponent in the group stage. The Kiwis also lost a match in Super Eight against England.
With no room for any more slip-ups, here are three key match-ups that could potentially decide the fate of this final:
Cole McConchie vs Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan

India’s left-handed top order was forced into a shuffle after off-spinners held a grasp over India’s scoring rate. The insertion of Sanju Samson provided balance, but Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan’s frailties against off-spin are still a threat for India.
In this World Cup, Abhishek averages less than 10 against off-spin and has been dismissed against the kind three times. Ishan is only slightly better with an average of 13. But he has been dismissed by off-spinners five times in eight innings.
In the semifinal against South Africa, New Zealand used Cole McConchie in the PowerPlay and he removed two batters, Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton, in an over.
Sanju Samson vs Matt Henry

Sanju Samson struck fifties and played crucial hands in India’s wins over West Indies and England. He is now India’s third-highest scorer this World Cup with 232 runs from four innings and averages 77 with a strike rate of 201.73.
He’ll be cautious of Matt Henry, who had dismissed him for a golden duck during a five-match series before this World Cup. In T20Is, Samson averages just 7.5 against Henry and has been dismissed twice.
Finn Allen vs Arshdeep Singh
Finn Allen blazed his way to a 33-ball hundred against South Africa in the semifinal, to record the fastest ton in T20 World Cups.
Allen and Tim Seifert have provided rapid starts to Kiwis’ innings through this tournament. New Zealand has scored at 9.87 per over in the PowerPlay, the highest among teams that reached the Super Eight.
Allen will undoubtedly take the aggressive route against India in the title match. In three innings against Arshdeep Singh in T20Is, Allen averages 47 with a strike rate of 223.8. Even Seifert boasts a strike rate of 218 against India’s left-armer, hinting that the Kiwis’ opening salvo will look to pounce early.
