IND vs NZ: Is there a Reserve Day for the T20 World Cup 2026 final?
India will be hoping to become the first team to defend the T20 World Cup title when it takes on New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
For the Kiwis, this will be the second appearance in a T20 World Cup final. It had reached the decider in the 2021 edition where it lost to Australia. If India clinches the title, it will also be the first team to wear the crown three times.
Although the weather forecasts do not predict rain for the day, there is a provision for a Reserve Day in the ICC Playing Conditions.
According to Appendix G of the document, “If play has not resumed by the cut-off time required to allow the minimum number of overs to be bowled (10) to achieve a result on the scheduled day, play shall be abandoned for the day and the Reserve Day shall be used to either complete or replay the match.”
However, the Reserve Day is the last resort. The Playing Conditions add that umpires have to make use of extra time on the scheduled match day to try and achieve a result. Only if that is not possible, will the Reserve Day provision be applicable.
Further, the number of overs to be bowled on the Reserve Day will determined in the following manner:
- If a match is reduced in terms of overs per side but play is not possible on the scheduled match day, the contest will resume on the Reserve Day as 20 overs per side.
- If a match is reduced in terms of overs per side and resumes on the scheduled day before another rain interruption forces the Reserve Day, the contest will resume from the point where it was abandoned at on the previous day.
