IND v SA, Fourth T20I: Nortje backs Proteas to keep series alive

Anrich Nortje backed South Africa’s approach heading into the must-win game against India ahead of the fourth T20I.

The Proteas’ batting collapses have cost them dearly in the two losses, and the pacer said the team is aware of where it needs to improve.

“There’s a lot of learning to be taken from these games. And I think the areas where we did slack off at times have already been identified. We know where we slacked in those areas. So it’s just about trying to be better the next time. Try and be on top of it the next time,” said Nortje on Tuesday.

Explaining that it has been small moments that have cost his side the game, the 32-year-old added, “It’s just one or two periods in the game. Maybe even a four- or five-over spell, a 10-20 minute lapse in concentration, or some skills not going according to plan in that short period when we lost. So it’s just to try and be better.”

The momentum has swung wildly between the two sides, and Nortje expressed confidence that his squad can pull things back in the remaining two fixtures. “I think it has been fluctuating quite a bit. But it’s part of T20 cricket. I really think it’s just about trying to be as consistent as you can, but also understanding that it might not be your night.”

“I really think it’s just about trying to be as consistent as you can, but also understanding that it might not be your night. It’s sort of a tough pill to swallow at times, but you’ve just got to focus on what’s coming up on the next ball, the next game, whatever it might be. Hopefully, we can put in a consistent performance from here on in and try to get two wins,” said Nortje.
