Romero rescues point for Spurs
Tottenham showed their character to deny Newcastle all three points.
Tottenham captain Cristian Romero rescued a point for under-fire Thomas Frank as they twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at Newcastle United.
Frank had gone into a tricky trip to St James’ Park under huge pressure following an insipid 2-1 home loss to Fulham, and they were on the back foot for the vast majority of the game on Tyneside.
Having frustrated Newcastle for 70 minutes, Tottenham were undone by Newcastle captain and surprise substitute Bruno Guimaraes, who produced a superb finish from the edge of the box to open the scoring.
Romero responded eight minutes later, beating Dan Burn to Mohammed Kudus’ near-post cross to restore parity.
It looked as if Anthony Gordon would prove Newcastle’s match-winner when he emphatically converted from the penalty spot after Bentancur was controversially ruled to have brought down Burn in the area, only for Romero to produce to some injury-time magic as his overhead kick somehow trickled beyond Aaron Ramsdale and into the bottom-right corner.
Both sides remain level on 19 points in the Premier League table, five points outside the top four.
