BAN vs IRE, 1st Test: Bangladesh beats Ireland by an innings and 47 runs
Bangladesh, with a victory by an innings and 47 runs, went 1-0 up in its two-Test series against Ireland at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
Ireland, having elected to bat first, could score only 286 in the first innings, as all of Bangladesh’s bowlers contributed in equal measure. Andy Balbirnie, the visiting skipper, opened the innings but never bothered the scorers, breaking the record for most ducks in Tests for Ireland.
In response, Bangladesh scored a mountain of runs, establishing a 301-run first-innings lead before declaring. Opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy starred with a career-best 171, while captain Najmul Hossain Shanto also scored a 100. The only highlight for the visitor in the said essay was Matthew Humphreys’ fifer.
Balbirnie was unable to open the batting with Paul Stirling after spraining a finger in the field. Coming in to bat at No. 8, he scored 38. Although Andy McBrine scored a fifty, Ireland was never really in the contest. The side lasted only 297 minutes to score 254 runs.
Debutant Hasan Murad proved to be the wrecker-in-chief with four wickets from 14 overs.
The second Test begins next Wednesday at Dhaka.
