‘He’s replying now!’ — Suryakumar Yadav reveals emotional update on Shreyas Iyer’s condition

India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav shared a positive update on Shreyas Iyer’s health on Tuesday, confirming that the middle-order batter is “stable” and “responding” to messages after suffering a serious injury during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Iyer has been hospitalised since Saturday after sustaining a ribcage injury while taking a diving catch. He was rushed to the hospital and later admitted to the ICU when his vitals dropped due to internal bleeding. Doctors later diagnosed a laceration to the spleen. Swift medical intervention, however, helped stabilise him.

Providing an update to reporters ahead of the T20I series, Suryakumar said, “When I got to know about his injury, I called our physio Kamlesh Jain. Iyer has been replying on the phone now, which means he is stable.”

Iyer was moved out of the ICU on Monday, and his recovery is progressing well. Suryakumar, currently in Australia for the five-match T20I series starting October 29 in Canberra, added that he intends to accompany Iyer home after the tour.

“It’s unfortunate what happened, and such cases are rare. But rare things happen to rare talent like Shreyas Iyer. By God’s grace, everything is fine. We’ll take him back home after the series,” he said.
