Inter Miami v Palmeiras: Line-ups, stats and preview

Inter Miami and Palmeiras are in pole position to qualify for the last 16 before their final games of the group stage when the teams meet in Miami on Tuesday.

The MLS team recovered from conceding early to beat Porto 2-1 through second-half goals on Thursday, leaving them level with their next opponents on four points at the top of Group A.

“We were convinced of what we have to do,” said Herons manager Javier Mascherano after his side followed up an opening 0-0 draw with reigning Egyptian champions Al-Ahly.

“If we have a plan, if we support each other, if we’re united, but above all, if we dare to play, we can compete… now we have to recover and give our all to try to qualify.

“Regardless of the result, it was a source of pride to play with the courage [the players] showed [against Porto]. In football, there are hierarchies, and we faced a team with a hierarchy, with world-class players.”

Palmeiras are yet to concede at the finals after drawing 0-0 with Porto and beating Al-Ahly 2-0 on Thursday in New Jersey.

Portuguese manager Abel Ferreira has said this week that he expects to imminently extend his contract with the Serie A club until 2027.

“We know that Inter Miami’s players, like [Lionel] Messi and [Luis] Suarez, are very strong,” said captain Gustavo Gomez. “But we will work hard to get the three points and qualify. It will be a difficult game.

“There was a lot of anxiety [against Porto] because it was the first game, because it was a World Club Cup, against a big team. The second game was more dangerous, but the team is improving game by game.”

Inter Miami v Palmeiras team news

Midfielder Anibal Moreno is out for Palmeiras with a thigh issue but could return for the round of 16, while Mauricio, who produced an assist against Al-Ahly, could supplant Raphael Veiga in midfield.

“Anibal won’t be able to play, unfortunately,” said Ferreira, adding that Emiliano Martinez is likely to replace him. “Maybe we’ll recover him for the next game.

“Emiliano is the one playing in the left-central position and they are players who have been playing very well so far.

“I’m sure that whoever plays will play because they really want to. Everyone wants to play and I’m sorry I haven’t put all the players in yet.”

Defenders Ian Fray and Marcelo Weigandt are doubts for Miami after both suffered issues against Porto, while goalkeeper Drake Callender is still out with a hernia problem.

Midfielder Yannick Bright and defender Gonzalo Lujan are injured.
