MI vs GT, IPL 2025: Mumbai Indians’ coach Jayawardene backs desicion to use Rohit Sharma as Impact Player
Mumbai Indians’ decision to use Rohit Sharma as an Impact Player in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has raised eyebrows.
But the team’s head coach Mahela Jayawardene revealed that with the India captain nursing a niggle since the Champions Trophy, it was a conscious decision to not ‘push him too hard’ in the early phase of the tournament.
“Rohit was on the field in some of the games. But if you look at the composition of the team, most of the guys are doing dual roles. Most of them are bowling. So all that also comes into play. And Rohit was also nursing a niggle from the Champions Trophy, so we wanted to make sure that we don’t push him too hard,” Jayawardene said.
“And, we have managed that while batting is the most important thing. But he’s contributed tremendously whether he’s on the field or not.
“He is always browning the dugout or he goes in during timeouts. And there’s a lot of communication happening. So actively involved. But it’s just overall planning for us to make sure that we have all the bowling options that we need on the field,” he added.
Mumbai Indians is placed third in the points table and will take on Gujarat Titans on Tuesday.
